Dentistry

Dental health is an important part of every pet’s overall health and dental problems can lead to other health problems. Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at their regular wellness exams by your veterinarian to check for early signs of problems and keep their mouth healthy.

Veterinary dentistry can include adjustment, extractions, repairs, filing, and maintenance cleaning of your pets' teeth. These procedures should only be performed by a veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary dentist.

The process begins with an exam of your pet’s mouth by our veterinarians. X-rays may be needed to evaluate the health of the jaw and tooth roots. Because most dental disease occurs below the gumline, where you can’t see it, a thorough dental cleaning and evaluation are performed under anesthesia. Dental cleaning includes scaling to remove dental plaque and tartar and polishing, similar to the process on your own teeth during dental cleanings.

If you notice that your pet has: bad breath, extra teeth or retained baby teeth, out of the ordinary chewing, drooling, or dropping food, swelling around the mouth, pain around the mouth, bleeding from the mouth, broken or loose teeth, discolored teeth, or loss of apetite/refusing to eat please seek veterinary care sooner than their regular wellness visit. Some pets become irritable when they have dental problems, and any changes in your pet’s behavior should prompt a visit to your veterinarian.

Prevention is the most effective aid to your pets oral health. The most common oral diseases can be typically be prevented with the frequent removal of plaque and tarter from the teeth with procedures available in your vets office and by regularly brushing you pets teeth. Brushing your pets teeth can significantly help the frequency of dental cleanings by your veterinarian. Daily brushing is optimal, but if not possible: several times per week can also be effective. Practice and training are the most effective ways to help your pet become comfortable with regular brushing. Talk with our experienced vets about the best products for your pet.
